Transportation Security Administration (TSA) protects the nation's transportation systems to ensure freedom of movement for people and commerce. Can I lock my luggage?

Yes, with any TSA approved luggage lock you can lock your carry-on and checked luggage. The TSA screens every piece of luggage before it is placed on an airplane. Some of these bags need to be hand inspected due to the limitations of X-ray machines. The TSA has worked hand-in-hand with lock manufacturers to develop a lock that can be opened by their security officers. The officers use coded keys to unlock your bags so that the locks will not be cut. These keys are heavily guarded and come in a number of different styles so you can be sure that only the TSA officers are the ones getting into your bags.

What is 3-1-1 for Carry-Ons?

3-1-1 is an easy way to remember TSA’s policy when you carry-on liquids. This limits the total liquid volume each person can bring with them on the plane.
3 ounce bottles or less in a
1 quart sized, clear plastic, zip-top-bag with a
1 bag per person limit.
Each time you go through a security checkpoint make sure you have this bag outside of your carryon and send it through the X-ray separately to speed screening. Exceptions include medications, breast milk, and juice in reasonable amounts and are not required to be in a clear zip-top bag but must be declared for inspection at the checkpoint.

Can I bring my lighter on the plane?

As of August 4th 2007, TSA lifted its ban on lighters in your carry-on luggage to free up their agents to do more to keep your travel safe. However, Torch lighters are still banned but can be put in your checked baggage. TSA confiscated an average of 22,000 lighters per day, taking time away from finding explosives, conducting random searches, using behavior recognition and other security measures. Since the U.S. was the only country in the world with a lighter ban, they decided to follow the rest of the world and deemed them not a serious threat.

Is it safe to bring batteries on board an airplane?

As of January 1st 2008, you can no longer check spare lithium batteries. Batteries installed in your electronics do not fall under this category and may be checked or carried on. However, we reccomend you carry-on all electronic devices due to damage or theft. Installed batteries are the safest way to transport lithium batteries no matter where you travel with them.
You can carry-on a limited amount of spare batteries in your carry-on but it is recommended that you pack them in seperate plastic bags or tape over the terminals to keep them from short-circuiting.
